#132🚿 Goals are a precondition to commitment
Why commitment matters more
I’m on a mission to put the “Personal” back into Personal Development
Shower thought🚿: Goals, Commitment, and taking action.
Last week, I wrapped up a big work project. This was something I was working on for 9 months, with lots of intensity, time, and mental effort. Finishing this felt good.
For about a day…
With the extra time and space, my brain naturally shifted into planning the “next big thing”.. Or next 5 or 10 big things. That’s the challenge living with a highly active brain (ADHD). I am constantly thinking. Pair that with an achiever’s mindset and I tend to dream up great ideas, many of them at the same time.
While reviewing my 2025 goals I realized two things:
I have made lots of progress on my stated 2025 goals.
I have more (not less) I want to accomplish in 2025 and beyond.
I have glaring weaknesses on the progress I’ve made on some of these goals.
This made me question myself and redefine how I approach my goals.
1. Vision is your “Why”
I’m dreaming again. It’s a beautiful thing.
I dream vividly at night. And I have vision for our future as a family.
Before we build anything we must dream it up.
2. Goals are your “How”
Goals are the stepping stones towards our vision.
They provide a “line in the sand”.
A clear indicator of what outcome you want by when.
There are many philosophies for goal setting, but there use and practicality are undeniable. Because vision is hard to achieve without knowing your targets along the way.
“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else.” — Yogi Berra
3. Commitment is your “What”
The “How” is in the “What”.
This is where I fail the most, and I would bet where most of you reading fail too.
Because dreaming is fun, goals make you feel good, but NO ONE likes commitment… And commitment to hard work, forget about it.
Commitment just sounds different.
It carries a certain weight.
It sends an entirely different message.
And when you commit to yourself, you feel it too.
Question for you…
Where can I help you?
Are you focused on commitment? Do you feel like you are an expert?
Where in your life would you like to build commitment.?
I’ll be diving deep on commitment this quarter, learning about it, writing about it, and applying it — moving my “hows” to “whats”.
Let’s get it done!
— Keep moving forward.
THANK YOU for making it to the end!
